Two thirds of people in Tete in Mozambique live in poverty; and the number of older people in the province is a third higher than the national average.
Health clinics are few and far between, and although most offer free health care, the poorest older people cannot even afford the public transport to reach them.
California Canivete says that if he is seriously ill, he has to go the nearest hospital in Tete. That would mean paying someone to take him by ox cart to the public road, and then taking public transport to the city one hour away. He cannot afford to do that, so we are concentrating on preventing older people like California from getting ill in the first place. On receiving a mosquito net, California said "I look forward to being really healthy so that I can live a longer and better life. Without this support, some of us older people would have died."
