Livestock saves lives

Giving goats in Ethiopia

Without livestock, Kula, 55, would not be able to support herself.

She is a widow and lives alone in a small village in southern Ethiopia.

Kula is typical of many older people in developing countries who have lost family members due to HIV and AIDS, conflict, drought or displacement. Older people, especially older women, are frequently left to fend for themselves, often with young grandchildren to care for.

Her rural community depends on livestock as their main source of food and income. But Kula, without her own livestock, was living in poverty with no means to support herself.

Thanks to our Ethiopian goat restocking programme, she received five goats. She explains how much this means to her:

‘I have benefited from my animals in so many ways. I get milk from them or I can sell them for cash. One kid has already been born and two of the other goats are pregnant.’
