Raising income in Vietnam

Funds to buy a cow have made a huge difference to the lives of Van Quang and his wife Thi who live off a small plot of land in Vietnam. They use the cow for ploughing and to fertilise their land, and now the cow has had a calf. The first calf will be passed onto another older person so they can also start to support themselves. The second calf can be sold if Quang and Thi need to pay for essentials such as a uniform for the grandchildren in their care.

Quang and Thi look after their two grandchildren, orphaned by AIDS, and one son, living with HIV. They do not qualify for a pension, so the extra income that the cow provides is essential.

In Quang’s words, the cow has ‘made a huge difference’, and when the next calf is born he knows the money he makes at the market will continue to support his grandchildren.
