A new career can change a life

New careers in Jamaica

Millard was living in a makeshift home made from sticks and pieces of old zinc. His house had been destroyed by Hurricane Gilbert in 1988 but Millard could not afford to rebuild it. The house had no piped water or electricity and the toilet was an outdoor pit.

Help the Aged supported a project to provide 50 older people in St Catherine with funds to buy fertilisers and plant a cassava crop for sale to a nearby factory.

Millard received a grant to plant crops including corn, red peas and sorrel. He reaped his first crop and replanted, selling the produce. He used that profit to buy food and water for himself and his family. In addition, the project made a grant for Millard to start planting half an acre of land with cassava. That crop is not yet harvested, but Millard will start reaping it soon.
