Give a grandchild a better start in life

Grandparents providing an education in Zambia

Deliva is a 63 year old widow. She had seven children, but three have died. For the past six years, she has been looking after her five orphaned grandchildren, aged between four and 18. The youngest grandson’s mother died the day he was born.

Deliva suffers from asthma and swollen legs. Every day she and the children need to collect firewood to sell. But the price she can get for firewood is not high. Without additional support, she and her grandchildren simply would not survive.

The Community Welfare Assistance Committee in Kalomo district, supported by Help the Aged, provided Deliva with school uniforms for her grandchildren, so three of them could go to school. She also receives a cash transfer which allows her to buy food and medication and pay for transport to visit her nearest doctor, 21km away.

For Deliva and her grandchildren, this project has been lifesaving. Through education, her grandchildren will have the means to lift themselves out of poverty.
