Restore the gift of sight
Providing healthcare to those in need
Thambi was blind for 17 years until a simple cataract operation restored her sight.
She lives with her disabled husband in a small hut in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka.
She didn’t know that her eyesight could be regained and did not see a doctor about it. She relied on her children and grandchildren to help her with her daily chores.
‘I was blind for 17 years; I had forgotten my children’s faces and had not even seen my grandchildren.’
She visited a free medical and eye camp provided by a local partner of Help the Aged. There, she was diagnosed with cataracts and given a date for an eye operation. It took just half an hour to restore her sight.
‘Now I can see my children again and can watch my grandchildren play. It is my biggest joy’
After the operation, Thambi was able to work again and applied for a small loan to start a poultry farm. Now she has chickens that provide her with eggs that she can sell at the market. Thambi has regained not only her sight, but also her independence.
