Planting seeds of hope

Reaping the harvest in Cambodia

Hum had to rely on her children for income until she received agricultural training and seeds from Help the Aged.

68-year-old Hum lives in a village in Battambang Province. She has to look after her husband who was left disabled after an accident.

She has a small garden on which she grows just enough food for her and her husband to eat, but she had to rely on her children for extra income to buy medicine for her husband and firewood for their home.

To support Hum and older people like her, Help the Aged set up an agricultural training programme. We built a public reservoir in the community so older people like Hum can get fresh drinking water every day, as well as an adequate supply for agricultural needs.

We taught Hum to grow many different vegetables; how to till the land; and how to use natural fertilizers and pesticide. We also gave her extra seeds for her garden.

Hum now has enough food, not only for herself and her husband, but also for the rest of her family. She can even sell the surplus once a week at the market, giving her a small sustainable income and more independence.
